Key Information
The Canary Islands have established themselves as an international leader in desalination and water treatment since the 1960s, when they installed the world’s first desalination plant for human consumption. With 330 plants, the archipelago has the highest density of desalination facilities, serving as a testing ground for innovative technologies such as isobaric energy recovery. Additionally, 30% of treated water is reused for irrigation, with a goal of reaching 70%. The region is a pioneer in integrating renewable energy into these processes, with projects successfully replicated in other countries. The company SOLO H2O is continuing this tradition with 100% sustainable solutions.
